Psalm 63:3-4 NIV
Because Your love is better than life, my lips will glorify You. I will praise You as long as I live, and in Your Name I will lift up my hands.

SONG SELECTION FAQ’s

Why are we talking about this to begin with?

In February following a conference many members expressed concerns that we were using songs from organizations like Bethel, Hillsong, etc. These organizations have beliefs and practices that range from questionable at best to heretical at worst. In response to the concern of many members, the elders have been prayerfully considering this matter.

Does our use of these songs fund these sources?

In order to stream songs online CFLM pays into Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI). To put it simply, it would be helpful to think of CCLI as a tax paid to use and stream the creative property of others. Organizations like Bethel receive funding from our CCLI whether we play their songs or not, though our use of their songs could result in royalties to them. Copyrights have layers, so one song could result in royalties to many sources.

If the sources are questionable, why are we using them?

Rachel and the worship team evaluate whether or not songs are fit for singing in praise based not on the source of the song but on a case by case basis based on the doctrine of the song itself.

To avoid conflict, why don’t we just sing hymns?

Like other praise songs, Rachel and the worship team evaluate whether or not songs are fit for singing in praise based on the doctrine of the song itself. CFLM sings both hymns and contemporary songs. Like some contemporary music, some hymns can have problematic sources, so the conflict is not avoided simply by singing hymns.

What should I do if I have concerns about a song we sing?

Christians are to exhibit knowledge and discernment (Phil. 1:9). Furthermore, we are encouraged to “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Col. 3:16). If you are concerned a song is failing to meet these standards, you are welcome to share your concerns with the elders.

Who oversees the worship team?

All staff of CFLM are overseen by the elders. As worship contains elements of teaching, administration, and shepherding, the team is overseen by the entirety of the eldership (EX: Teaching elders focus on overseeing the doctrine of a song, administrative elders focus on the sound system and streaming of the service, etc.). The elders of CFLM trust and support the judgement of Rachel, the worship team and all of the great staff the LORD has brought to our church.
