MSN and other sources reported last week that the European Commission has authorized the use of mealworms and house crickets for human consumption.  Apparently, these critters can be dried out and ground into a powder that can be used like flour. At this point, Europeans get to choose whether or not they eat this alternate food source a, “If insects are used, this must be included on the product’s list of ingredients, so consumers can decide for themselves whether to buy it or not, said the EU Commission website.”

The article on “The Source” (European Union Announces Cricket Powder Will Replace Many Food Items (thesource.com)) gives lots of chewy tidbits of information. Plans are to use the cricket meal and mealworm meal (meal meal?) in products like nuts, pizza, and chocolate. I could hardly stomach the extensive list.

The article would have us believe the idea started with Bill Gates as part of his efforts to save the planet by awarding food manufacturers grants to use insects for new nutritionally dense foods. According to reports, Congress is considering similar legislation for the use of bugs to replace meat in American stores. Creepy!

Puns aside, I can assure you that the idea didn’t originate with Bill Gates or any other political leader. Paul told Timothy stuff like this would happen in the last days. In 1 Timothy 4:1-3 we read,

Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

I have some thoughts who the “liars whose consciences are seared” may be, but their ideas were not their own; they came from deceitful spirits and demons. Based on these verses, we should expect that these authoritarian liars will come up with lots of alternative food sources then begin to ban real food.

Did you notice that Paul distinguished between those leaders and us? We are not deceived. We believe and know the truth. God’s intention for us in the last days is to continue eating real food with thanksgiving.
